What happens when, after years of failed attempts, he finds a way to get this fuel source? As Boyd states in his Afterward, "No matter which side of the environmental argument they are on, most agree that the people who mine coal are some of the most courageous human beings in the world."

    • Graphic novels about Appalachia are few and far between. In my state, one of the very few decent-paying jobs (or at least what passes as decent pay in West Virginia), is coal mining. • This was a great read, I started it last night and couldn't put it down! Carbon was a compelling story and it was readily apparent that the subject matter was near and dear to the author's heart. It raises awareness about real world issues concerning coal and our environment blended in the mythological tale spanning past and present. I'm eager to read more!
