    • Desconcerta-me. Li tudo. Forcei-me a reler algumas passagens. E nada me emocionou. E não me basta.

    • Tora lives in the world where the stars don't want to see or hear about the earthen worries, where free birds use wings not for flying but as crutches while crippling through life, where only the sea adorns with a feeling of fragile security. She becomes real-self only when she is alone, sometimes the girl feels like a horrible monster because of her secret world; still it is she, Tora, with her own thoughts and life. Thoughts are the most amazing thing that Tora has ever known, though some of th [...]

    • My heart ached the whole time I read this novel - for Tora especially but also for her mother, for her aunt, for her friend Sol and Sol's mother. These women do not have easy lives, but Tora's burden is most difficult to bear. She's just 11, but she is abused both sexually and physically by her stepfather, her mother puts up an invisible wall of sorrow and silence, and she is an outcast because her father was a German soldier (the novel takes place in post-World War II Sweden). The early pages o [...]

    • At times it's a difficult book to read. Not because it's badly written but because Tora has such a difficult life. She's the daughter of a German soldier living in post war Norway. Her mother's husband is a bitter man and she's an easy target. That said it's a hard book to put down because the characters are so interesting. May have to track down the other books in the trilogy.

    • Extraordinariamente bem escrito e bem elaborado. O leitor fica preso a Tora desde a primeira página.

    • 3 StarsAnother list book down. I love that it makes me discover books I wouldn’t have otherwise. Sometimes they are gems and sometimes not as much, but I always take something away from having read them. This one is not an exception. It’s about Tora which is half German in a time where that was really hard. She lives with her mother and her step father I guess you could say and he abuses her. It’s quite the dark theme and Torda is just a girl, but strangely the novel isn’t written in a l [...]

Impos [...]

    • While beautifully written, this book is very difficult to read due to its subject matter. Wassmo's stunning story takes place in a northern fishing village in Norway after WWII. The main character, 11-year-old Tora, is relatable, imaginative, and worthy of our confidence. The representations of sexual abuse in the novel is hard to bear, but Tora's imagination and resilience shines through the darkest of circumstances. It also shows a brutally honest depiction of the hard-working women of this sm [...]

    • It is a story of a young girl struggling with her life that is not rosy at all. She is a daughter of a German soldier after the war (in Norway), her stepdad is violent and abusive, her mother seems to be blind to all the things around her and thus Tora feels alone. The angst is quite well described although at times it seems that the author has overestimated the intelligence of an 11-year old. The backround story was also rather captive. But I did not like this book. The writing style was not enj [...]

    • The House With The Blind Glass Windows was an excellent peek into a fishing village in northern Norway and also the life of 11 year old Tora. Her plight for safety from her sexually abusive stepfather and the need to connect with her mother is a heartbreaking story. Throughout the whole novel, Tora has remarkable strength and fights her battle alone. I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy but unfortunately, the rest has not yet been translated.

    • Herbjog Wassmo's "The House with the Blind Glass Windows" is a good book but profoundly sad, making it difficult to read. Her protagonist Tora is living in a very poor fishing village and suffers abuse of every kind imaginable at the hands of her stepfather. Her mother has essentially checked out and Tora suffers in silence.Much of the book focuses on Tora's inner life and longing to escape. It really rings true and has an honest feel about it. I liked Tora and the writing enough that I will be [...]

    • The story of this book can turn around stories already told before by several authors, as Tora is a young girl feeling different because her father was a Deutsch soldier and left its marks of grief. Her mother is a part of her wellness, but she works hard and Tora spends many time alone, fearing her drunken stepfather, that abuses her. Tora is a dreamer too, and she alienates from the world that surrounds her by dreaming. The story is filled with a feeling of desolation and bleakness that makes [...]

• God’s uncaged birds were often overlooked. They didn’t fly-didn’t even hop. But they used their wings for support as they dragged themselves back and forth. A wing can be used for so many things.*Memories…of something else, something different? If only she could have her memories in peace! If only she could have the peace to sit down and make herself warm and happy by remembering a loved face, hands… a life that should have been…
